Welcome to Nota Bene for the week of January 30.

New/Urgent Announcements:

This Morning's Parent Reading Group Postponed

The Parent Reading Group that was scheduled for this Tuesday morning (1/31) has been postponed for now.

The book we were scheduled to discuss, "Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child" by Anthony Esolen, is still an excellent and thought-provoking book. If you'd like to get a hard copy, they are available at www.conservativebookclub.com. It is also available as an electronic book from Amazon.com, which you can download to your Kindle, iPad, Nook, smart phone, or even to your computer. Let us know what you think; we'd still like to discuss the ideas Mr. Esolen presents, if somewhat less formally.

Hopefully we will be able to reschedule formal discussion of this book at a later time.

New Student Applications Due Tuesday, January 31

 Tuition Assistance

We want to remind you that we have made more money available through our tuition assistance program this year, in light of the recent tuition increase, so we'd encourage you to apply whether your need is big or small. This is a confidential assessment conducted by a third party. It's a relatively simple process. To explore or apply, visit our school website www.cambridgeclassical.org and click on Admissions. Click on the FAST icon, and you can apply directly from there.

 Announcements Regarding Staff Changes

    Heather Yphantides

We regret to announce the departure of our dear friend and colleague, Heather Yphantides. After 2-1/2 years of tireless and devoted service to The Cambridge School as Admissions Director, Heather has decided to take a part-time position elsewhere that allows her to spend more time with her family and especially her children. Her last day with us on staff will be this Friday, February 3rd. We want to thank Heather for her many efforts to grow the school and to fill our classrooms with wonderful students and families. And we wish her all the best as she seeks more work/life balance and starts this new chapter of life.

    Mitchell Dong

Today we welcome Mitchell Dong as the newest member of our administrative staff. Mitch is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University, and his work experience includes projects in publishing, branding and identity, and graphic design. He has a heart for classical, Christian education, and he will be serving as our Marketing & Communications Coordinator.

    Natalie Balmer

Although we are sad to lose Heather from our ranks, staff changes sometimes create opportunities for personal and professional growth for others. We are delighted to announce that Natalie Balmer has accepted the challenge to come on staff in a full-time capacity adding Admissions Coordinator to her Front Office Reception duties. While we continue to look for a full-time Admissions Director as well, we rejoice in God's provision for the school at this time of transition and His providence in the lives of these individuals.

Science Field Day Update - "Interest List" Deadline is TODAY!

An interest list is now forming for 4th-6th grade students who would like to participate in San Diego County Science Field Day on May 12. We will bring a team of up to 14 students to Science Field Day, which has competitive and non-competitive events designed to help students get excited about science while learning in-depth about specific topics. Participation will require attendance at an after school club starting in early March or independent study with a volunteer coach. Thank you so much to our volunteer coaches: Simmi John, Allen Priest, Robin Jackman, Karen VanHoesen, and Ray Hom. We couldn't do it without you! Please send an email to Melissa Gingrich at melissa@cambridgeclassical.org for more information or to place your child on the interest list. The deadline to include your child on the interest list is TODAY, Tuesday, January 31.

 Medieval Faire Pig Roast

This Wednesday, February 1st, the fourth grade class will participate in the third annual Medieval Faire. One of the highlights of the faire is a medieval style feast. Most of the dishes that students will partake of during the feast are made from authentic medieval recipes. A whole roast pig is the high note of the feast. The pig will be roasting on the upper field and will not be seen when dropping students off in the morning. Classes are welcome to visit the upper field to see the pig. If you would prefer that your student not sees the pig cooking please contact your child's lead teacher in advance, and they will make alternate provisions. Thank you for your assistance!

    — Rebekah Kennedy, 4th Grade Lead Teacher

 Homework Club — Still Open!

The registration deadline has been extended for the Homework Clubs (third through sixth grades). This is an incredible resource at a very reasonable price, but if we cannot meet a three-student minimum for any one session, we will not be able to hold that class. Registrations are rather lean so far, so sign up now! Fill out the registration form and return it the front office anytime up to 24 hours before the first class for whichever session you are registering. Don't miss out!

Click here for the registration form.

 Woodworking Bus Returns

The Woodworking Enrichment class for 1st-3rd grades starts this week. Class runs for three Fridays (2/3, 2/10, 2/24), 3:05-4:30pm in the upper parking lot. There are just a few openings left, so grab 'em before the class fills up! The class for 4th-6th grades will start Thursday, March 8th.

    NEED MORE INFO:

Join Us for Our Next Parent Academy on February 24th

Though not directly in keeping with our science and technology focus for this year, we have the exceptional opportunity to meet and listen to a very special guest, Alan Crippen, President of the John Jay Institute. The Rev. Alan Crippen, II will speak with us on "A Tale of Five Cities: Human Flourishing and the American Order," about the “ordered liberty” that we enjoy here distinctively in America. Click here to view the flyer for more information.

Please RSVP here to help us plan for the evening.

Sign Up for Kids Night Out
by Midnight on Tuesday, February 21st

To make it easier for you to attend Parent Academy on February 24th we are offering this opportunity for a structured, fully-supervised, fun-filled time for toilet-trained children ages three and up. Pizza will be served, and the kids will watch a G-rated movie and play lots of fun games!

The cost is $12 per child, or a maximum of $40 per family. You will be billed afterwards via FACTS. Kids Night Out will be held at the same location as the Parent Academy: St. Timothy's Episcopalian Church, next door to the Cambridge campus.

Click here for the Kids Night Out flyer.

Register your child(ren) by going to www.cambridgeclub.us. Use the same login and password that you use to order lunches or sign up for Cambridge Club. If you do not know your login or password, please email barbara@cambridgeclassical.org.

The deadline to register your child(ren) for Kids Night Out is midnight of the Tuesday before (February 21st, for the next Kids Night Out on Friday, February 24th). You may also remove kids from the sign-up list as long is it is prior to the same deadline. Because we must plan ahead for sufficient supervision and pizza, you must still pay for any children who are registered after midnight on Tuesday, February 21st, even if they do not attend.

Parking Lot and Courtyard Safety Before and After School

Just a friendly reminder that the Parent Student handbook states that you should escort your children onto campus instead of letting them out at the curb or in the driveway. There is plenty of parking in the upper lot and this is much safer for the children and will help to relieve congestion at the driveway entrance.

Additionally, please remember that there is no supervision for your children prior to 8:05am or after pick up at 3pm unless students are enrolled in afterschool enrichments or Cambridge Club. The playground is closed afterschool, and we would kindly ask that you supervise your children closely after school so that we don't have any accidents, injuries or missing children. Thank you so much for your cooperation!

 Bookmark Our Website!

Parents, we know you look up our website for all sorts of different information from directory information to calendar information and we want you to keep doing that etc. However, we would appreciate it VERY much if you would bookmark our site on your smartphones and computer to find our site. If you do a Web search and then click on search results, we have to pay for every single click through and that would be a sad way to spend all our marketing dollars. Thank you so much for your help in this small way!

Join Us for Parents in Prayer This Morning

Please join us this morning, and every Tuesday morning, after the children are dismissed from the sanctuary for a fundamental component of the life of our school: Parents in Prayer (PIP). This is your opportunity to hear about the specific prayer needs of the school and lift them up to the Lord as a group of parents. If you don't feel comfortable praying out loud in a group, you can still attend and pray along! Those who have participated in the past claim it is a wonderful way to support the school in a powerful way, and their faith has been strengthened as they see so many answers to prayer. Join us!

Occasional Finds: Interesting Things To Think About

This is a new section in our Nota Bene. Occasionally we come across articles, recordings, or other musings that we find thought provoking, and that we think you may be interested in exploring as well. These may or may not be ideas we necessarily agree with, or even expect to follow here at The Cambridge School, but we find them excellent topics for discussion. Read them at your leisure. Tell us what you think.

 Grading the Digital School:
A Silicon Valley School That Doesn't Compute

From The New York Times Technology section, October 23, 2011, by Matt Richtel: The Silicon Valley Waldorf School's computer-free environment has become a draw for parents at high-tech companies in the area like Google, eBay, Apple, Yahoo, and Hewlett-Packard.

Startling Clarity: Moral Relativism and Education

From Chuck Colson's BreakPoint Daily, 1/10/2012, a startling example of how moral relativism has produced "ethical paralytics" and the importance of teaching the Ten Commandments as expressions of objective truth. A bit of an advertisement for their "doing the right thing" study, but still...
